Flying with Tony Hewitt: Art from the Air in the Kimberley

Each year, we collaborate with Tony Hewitt, a renowned Australian Landscape photographer, who leads aerial photography workshops around the world. Tony has a keen eye for capturing abstract, artistic aerial images from above, and there’s no better place to do that than right here in the Kimberley.

The Kimberley, Seen Differently

From the air, the Kimberley transforms into a breathtaking tapestry of shapes and patterns. The winding waterways, shifting colours, and intricate textures create a natural canvas that only reveals its full beauty when viewed from above; the perfect setting for capturing abstract, artistic aerial photographs.

This is what Tony is drawn to… the textures, the colours, the raw, untouched beauty of the region. What looks like a quiet stretch of coastline from the ground becomes a swirling work of art when seen from above.

A Unique Partnership

We’ve been flying Tony, often with his co-tour leader Peter Eastway, along their workshop guests, for several years now, providing helicopter charter services that help them reach remote areas and capture moments you simply can’t see from the ground. Helicopters give the flexibility to hover, adjust height, and follow the light, something no other aircraft can do in quite the same way.

Our pilots work closely with Tony & Peter to ensure they and their group are positioned exactly where they need to be to capture their amazing images. It’s a real team effort, part aviation, part art, part chasing light and shadow across an ancient landscape.

“It is a privilege to have been able to work with the crew at Frontier Helicopters for many years now. While their flying experience, intimate knowledge of the area and passion for the region are invaluable, it is the safety and enjoyment of our guests, as they join us on our photographic adventures that is the highest priority. The pilots and support staff always seek to deliver a first-class experience, and we look forward to our next opportunity to explore the incredible beauty of the Kimberley from the air with the Frontier Helicopters team.” – Tony Hewitt

Beyond the View: Art from Above

The Kimberley is full of stunning natural patterns, winding waterways, textured mudflats, and intricate shapes carved by tides and time. Seeing it from the air is always incredible but seeing it through Tony & Peter’s lenses brings a whole new perspective. They have a unique ability to transform these remote landscapes into bold, abstract artworks. For those joining their workshops, it’s more than just a lesson in photography; it’s a chance to explore the art hidden in the land through creative aerial photography.
